Assassination attempt on Mangala: Hard labour for two in prison

Two persons found guilty of providing information to the Liberations Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in its attempt to assassinate Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana Wing) convenor Mangala Samaraweera were sentenced to 11 years hard labour in prison.

Colombo High Court judge Sunil Rajapaksha delivered the sentence when the case filed by the Attorney General against these two persons for their involvement in the 2006 incident to assassinate Mr. Samaraweera either in Matara or Colombowas taken up.

G.G. Ranaweera alias Malli and Sampath Thushara were accused of providing information to the LTTE regarding Mr. Samaraweera’s movements in 2006, while he was a Cabinet Minister of the then government.

The two were also accused of possessing such information and not revealing them to police.
