If Maldives approaches on diplomatic channels, Sri Lanka is ready to negotiate regarding the extension of the continental shelf, Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne told Ada Derana a short while ago. Maldives is attempting to extend its continental shelf overlapping a portion of the area claimed by Sri Lanka last year.

Senaratne said that every country makes claims to extend its continental shelf however the UN is scheduled to take up the issue in 2020. However Senaratne claimed that Sri Lanka through the Foreign Ministry is attempting to schedule the revision earlier that 2020.
