Monday Feb 23, 2009 Sri Lankan nationals and supporters across the United States held a rally in Washington to urge the US Government to put pressure on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to release innocent civilians held by the LTTE as human shields.
A large number of Sri Lankans attended the rally, representing the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. The supporters gathered on the Ellipse in front of the White House to counter the false and malicious propaganda of the pro-LTTE diaspora.
US authorities have prosecuted a number of persons involved in the collection of funds and procurement of arms for the LTTE, and legal action has been taken in Canada and some EU countries against front organizations, such as the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) and the World Tamil Movement (WTM) involved in the collection of funds for the LTTE.
The FBI released a statement last year warning US citizens to be cautious when donating to charities, as many more similar front organizations are prevalent in the US, collecting funds and supplying arms and ammunition to the LTTE to carry out their acts of terror.
